Immigration continues to be a significant issue as President Trump nears the 100-day milestone. However, recent polls indicate that some individuals believe his actions on contentious matters are excessive.
New findings from Associated Press-NORC Civil Service Research Center reveal that 46% of US adults generally approve of Trump’s immigration stance, while 53% disapprove.
His immigration approval rating was approximately 10 percentage points higher than the support he garnered in economic and trade matters, which both stood at 37%.
The opinions are also divided along party lines, with the majority of Democrats perceiving his actions as excessive, while most Republicans consider them to be “appropriate.”
Among the policy-specific questions asked in the survey, respondents were most favorable towards canceling student visas, with 28% in support, 24% neutral, and 47% disapproving.
On Friday, the Trump administration restored over 1,000 visas for international students after facing multiple lawsuits.
In comparison, 41% of those surveyed favored the deportation of Venezuelan immigrants. The US claimed a gang affiliation regarding an individual in a Salvadoran prison, with 38% supporting the deportation of all immigrants residing in the US, based on the polls.
Since returning to the White House, Trump has enacted multiple executive orders and policies aimed at immigrants and his administration has deported 200 Venezuelan and Salvadoran men, leading to numerous legal challenges.
The Associated Press’ NORC national poll was conducted from April 17-21, through online and telephone interviews with 1,260 adults. The overall margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.
