Nebraska needed a change after its coaching staff was shaken up following the loss to Illinois

Nebraska coach Matt Rhule is looking for a new approach on offense after a difficult stretch for the Cornhuskers.

Rhule removed Dana Holgorsen as offensive coordinator following Nebraska’s 24-13 loss to Illinois on Friday. The decision came just five days after Rhule praised Holgorsen as “one of the best offensive minds of our generation.”

Glenn Thomas, Nebraska’s co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, will handle play-calling. The Cornhuskers have scored 54 points during a four-game losing streak.

“Like so many of you, I am angry, I am disappointed and I am frustrated with our results this season,” Rhule said. He added that, as head coach, he is responsible for every part of the program and must make changes when needed.

Rhule said he continues to respect Holgorsen’s coaching and leadership, but felt the offense needed a new direction.

“While there are many areas that need improvement, our offensive plan and execution is simply not working,” Rhule said. “Earlier today, I relieved offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen of his duties. Dana has a fantastic offensive mind, he is a strong leader, and he has done great work here at Nebraska. But simply, we need a change.”

Holgorsen drew criticism after Nebraska’s 17-10 loss to Washington, when the Huskers leaned heavily on the passing game and quarterback Anthony Colandrea threw 44 times. Earlier in the week, Rhule had described Holgorsen as one of his generation’s top offensive minds.

Against Illinois, Nebraska again struggled with penalties, missed field goals and play-calling. The Huskers scored on only two of nine possessions. Across their past four games, they have scored on nine of 46 drives.

Rhule said he would keep evaluating the program during the season and make further changes if he believes they could help the team win. He also praised Nebraska’s fans and said the program was focused on finishing the season well, with important games still to come.

Holgorsen is in his second full season as Nebraska’s offensive coordinator. He joined the team as an offensive consultant in November 2024 after leaving a similar role at TCU. A week later, Rhule promoted him to coordinator after moving Marcus Satterfield to another position.

Nebraska visits Rutgers in New Jersey next week.
