Trump Intensifies Demands for Bagram Airfield

Former President Donald Trump is making stronger demands for the Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan, recently expressing threats directed at the Taliban, who assumed control following the U.S. withdrawal from the country back in 2021.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “The people who built it, the United States of America… bad things are going to happen!!! If we don’t give the DJT president an air base in Bagram.”

The chief commander didn’t specify what consequences the Taliban might face if they fail to return control of Bagram. It’s also unclear how involved the U.S. military plans to be in possibly reoccupying this significant location.

Trump mentioned the idea of U.S. troops retaking major air bases while alongside British Prime Minister Kiel on Friday. He remarked, “We’re trying to get it back; they need things from us, so we’re trying to get it back.”

He further emphasized, “We want to get that base back, but one reason we want it is, as you know, that China is an hour away from where it makes nuclear weapons.”

Bagram Air Force Base, located in eastern Afghanistan, is strategically positioned near both China and Pakistan. Following the attacks on September 11, 2001, it became crucial for operations during the Afghanistan War but was left abandoned during the chaotic U.S. withdrawal under the Biden administration in 2021.

The base, once home to fast-food outlets like Burger King and Pizza Hut, along with a substantial prison complex and a store selling various goods, has become a topic of discussion in Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign as he highlights its importance, warning that China is now in control of it—a claim denied by the Taliban.

In response, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid suggested that Trump’s assertions were based on “emotional statements” fueled by unfounded information.
