Negotiations Are Stalled
Milwaukee – A week has passed, and my medical insurance still isn’t covering the necessary services. Ascension Wisconsin and UnitedHealthcare have yet to come to an agreement. This situation has thrown a wrench into things for many residents in Wisconsin, leaving them in a sort of limbo, unable to access their healthcare providers.
Contract Was Not Concluded
What we know:
During a Finance and Human Resources Committee hearing on October 8, city leaders in Milwaukee listened to advocates discuss the impact of the ongoing disruption in medical services. Around 2,000 city employees find themselves affected, alongside countless other Wisconsinites.
City officials are worried about the health of residents if Ascension Wisconsin and UnitedHealthcare can’t reach an agreement. The deadline for a new contract was set for October 1, but no contract was realized. Consequently, UnitedHealthcare is now out of the Ascension network.
What they are saying:
The Finance and Personnel Committee didn’t take any concrete actions during Wednesday’s meeting. However, officials are closely monitoring the situation. Milwaukee City Councilmember Marina Deimitrijevic expressed concerns about the impact on residents. “People are turning to Aurora and other providers. The big question is whether they’ll return, especially when large corporations are making huge profits. It adds stress, and I think they really need to find common ground,” she remarked.
Glendale resident Margaret Reed shared her own worries. She’s hoping to make it through the year without any health issues. “It was a little scary,” she said. “There wasn’t a helpline to call, and finding a replacement within my network was no easy task.”
