Neighbor accused of killing missing Oregon newlywed nurse makes first court appearance

An Oregon man charged with murdering a nurse who disappeared for days after returning home from a wedding made his first court appearance Monday.

The Beaverton Police Department arrested Jonathan Bryce Shubert, 27, a neighbor of Melissa Jubanet, 32, whose body was discovered days after she was reported missing after failing to show up for work.

Schubert has been charged with second-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping and second-degree criminal injure of a corpse, authorities said. He is being held without bail in the Washington County Jail on the murder charge.

Schubert appeared by video at Monday's hearing and did not enter a plea at his arraignment. According to KATU News.

Authorities said after a thorough investigation, it was determined Schubert was involved in her disappearance.

Fox 12 According to the report, Schubert worked as a nurse at Providence Portland Medical Center from September 2022 to October 2023. However, Schubert was not employed by Providence St. Vincent, where Melissa worked, Providence said in a statement Saturday morning.

Beaverton Police Department Police confirmed Saturday that Jubaneh's body was found after a three-day search, just two weeks after she married Brian Lantero, of Kalihi, Hawaii.

“We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the community members who assisted in the search for Melissa, and our deepest condolences go out to Melissa's family, friends and coworkers,” Beaverton police said in a previous statement.

“We acknowledge the significant public interest and concern but must not disclose any further details to preserve the integrity of the investigation,” the statement continued.

Jubaneh's family declined to comment on the investigation but issued a statement to KATU News.

“We are extremely grateful for the love, support and prayers we have received from the detectives and other personnel who are working so diligently on this case, as well as from the nation at large – especially the City of Beaverton, her work family at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Providence St. Vincent Church and the Lantero family.”

The Oregon Nurses Association (ONA) also released a statement offering its full support to all those affected by Jubanez's death.

“The Oregon Nurses Association is heartbroken by the death of Melissa Jubain, an outstanding nurse at St. Vincent Hospital and a member of the Oregon Nurses Association. Our hearts go out to Melissa's family, friends and colleagues during this extremely difficult time. We grieve with our community and offer all our support to all those affected by this tragic loss.”

The group held a prayer vigil in memory of Jubané on Monday night.

Schubert's case was reviewed Tuesday morning and he is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary arraignment hearing on Sept. 16. KPTV reported.
