Orlando Gun Violence Prevention Program Faces Shutdown
In a surprising turn of events, a gun violence prevention initiative in Orlando, known as Operation New Hope, has shut down abruptly after receiving a substantial $1.5 million federal grant. This decision follows a series of controversies, including the arrest of a member designated as a “neighborhood change agent.”
The CEO and President, Reggie Fullwood, communicated the program’s halt to partner organizations, indicating all personnel—including peacekeepers, therapists, and job coaches—have been terminated.
Concerns have emerged regarding the integrity of the program; Fullwood noted multiple arrests among staff, significant breaches of trust, and overall accountability failures, which have severely compromised the program’s effectiveness. It’s a troubling situation.
Details have also surfaced about a former state juvenile justice probation officer, Crystal Lawson, who was detained for allegedly leaking sensitive information to drug dealers. Interestingly, Lawson had access to a state court records database due to her previous job, but there was no immediate action taken to revoke that access after her termination in February 2022 over a battery charge.
Authorities claim Lawson conducted unauthorized searches, and a confidential warrant made its way to individuals involved in the fentanyl trade. The investigation pointed to her father, identified as Melvin Lawson, who allegedly boasted about illegally accessing this data.
This breach has had significant repercussions, leading to lost evidence and allowing suspects to evade capture.
Facing 113 felony counts of computer crimes, Lawson could be sentenced to a staggering 560 years in prison. Each felony charge carries a $10,000 bail amount, summing up to $1.14 million, which she has managed to secure.
As the situation unfolds, it remains uncertain whether these allegations tie directly to the Community Violence Intervention Program, which has been active since its inception in 2022 and expanded its outreach efforts in 2023 with the new funding.
