Neil Bush Votes for Democratic Senate Candidate
Neil Bush, whose family includes former Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, has made headlines by announcing his support for James Talarico, a Democratic candidate for the Texas Senate.
In a detailed Facebook post on Tuesday, Neil revealed that he voted for Talarico, despite identifying as a Republican for the majority of his life.
“I have never posted a political message on Facebook, not wanting to offend friends whose views may be very different than mine. I’m breaking that tradition because I voted early today, and I voted for James Talarico for the United States Senate,” he mentioned. “My vote was motivated by two things: deep concern about Ken Paxton’s record and genuine admiration for the character and principles I see in James Talarico.”
Neil commended Talarico, a Presbyterian seminarian, for his faith, noting that it seems to stem from humility and compassion, rather than being used as a political tool.
Talarico has faced criticism over his views on various issues tied to Christianity, particularly around abortion and transgender topics.
During an interview, he stated, “Jesus never talks about abortion. The Bible is silent on abortion.”
While the Bible doesn’t directly address abortion, many Christians reference several scriptures from both the Old and New Testaments to support pro-life stances, including Psalm 139:13, which talks about God creating life in the womb.
In a May interview with CBS News, Talarico acknowledged that he felt some of his statements on cultural matters, including his comment about God being “non-binary,” were perhaps a bit off-point.
“Well, you know, I think I was being intentionally provocative with that statement, but what it means is that God cannot be defined by human categories,” he reflected.
Neil Bush expressed his opposition to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, particularly criticizing Paxton’s role in challenging the 2020 presidential election results, which he described as detrimental to democratic institutions.
“I have been a Republican for most of my life, and I still believe deeply in many traditional Republican principles,” Bush said. “But character matters more than party affiliation. Our democracy depends on leaders who respect our institutions, tell the truth, accept accountability, and seek to unite rather than divide.”
The Senate race between Paxton and Talarico has drawn significant national interest, with reports of high early voting turnout across multiple Texas counties.
