Nepal halting permits for Gurkhas in Russian army

Nepal on Friday stopped issuing permits to its citizens to work in Russia following the deaths of 10 Nepali soldiers in the Ukraine war..

Nepal's government says at least 200 of its citizens work in the Russian military, and Foreign Minister NP Saud told state news agency RSS that 100 Nepalis are missing in the country.

Nepalese soldiers, known as Gurkhas, are legendary for their skills on the battlefield. After India's independence in 1947, they served in the British and Indian armies under a trilateral agreement. Reports say there was no agreement with Russia for soldiers to fight in the nearly two-year-old conflict in Ukraine.

Nepali migrant workers need permission from the government to accept jobs abroad. This permit allows them to receive government assistance in the event of an emergency overseas, and to provide compensation to their families in the event of death.

Millions of Nepalis are employed as laborers in South Korea and the Middle East.

More than 800 Nepalis have been issued work permits for non-military employment in Russia in the past two years.

According to reports, Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov is sending at least 200 Nepali soldiers to fight in Ukraine. More than 100 Nepali nationals are reported missing in the country. AP
