Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said on CNN’s “Inside Politics” on Friday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “absolutely” should not have been invited to address Congress.
Host Dana Bash asked, “If you were still speaker, would you have invited him?”
“No. Absolutely not. I think this is wrong. Frankly, I did not support him being invited the last time. But the speaker, on his own initiative, without consulting the rest of the leadership, invited him. And he came and criticized the great job that President Obama did with the nuclear deal to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. I thought that was completely inappropriate. I’m very disappointed that he was invited, but who knows how he’ll still be prime minister by then,” Pelosi said.
She added: “I hope he becomes a politician and does the right thing for Israel. We all love Israel. We all fought for Israel. October 7 was a terrible day. Hamas is a terrorist organization. They are dedicated to the destruction of Israel. The hostages have not been released. The people of Gaza are suffering. We have to help them. We have to make sure that Mr. Netanyahu doesn’t get in the way for too long. So I think it will just invite more of what we’ve seen in terms of our people’s discontent with what’s going on there. Let’s try to make a two-state solution to make peace in the region, rather than coming to the capital and gathering protesters.”
