Netflix criticized for labeling 'Gone with the Wind' with a Black Lives Matter tag

Netflix is facing criticism online for how it presents the classic film “Gone with the Wind” on its platform. The description currently circulating contains a political message that labels the 1939 movie as “a Civil War epic known for its racism.” It also encourages viewers to seek out content related to Black Lives Matter, stating, “If you want to learn more about Black lives in America, search for ‘Black Lives Matter.'” Interestingly, while the film isn’t available for streaming in the U.S., its title page exists as an inactive placeholder on the site. The inclusion of the Black Lives Matter reference has sparked backlash, with some accusing Netflix of inserting a modern political agenda onto a historical film, though it’s still unclear who authored this description.

Comments from users have been varied. Jack Posobiec from Turning Point Action responded to a social media post displaying a screenshot of the Netflix page, suggesting viewers “purchase physical media.” Meanwhile, billionaire Elon Musk chimed in with a brief comment about the situation, stating simply that “Changes are needed.” A conservative account even expressed disbelief at the description’s existence, remarking, “Oh my god. I just checked. It’s real.”

This isn’t entirely new, either. The same description has been in place for some time. For comparison, HBO Max describes the movie without such a political spin, instead noting it as “a strong-willed Southern belle’s struggle during the Civil War,” while Hulu refers to it as “the classic story of Scarlett O’Hara’s fight to save her beloved Tara.”

“Gone with the Wind” has long incited controversy over its portrayal of race and has faced criticism for glamorizing the antebellum South. Back in 2020, HBO Max temporarily removed the film following a Los Angeles Times piece calling for its withdrawal, but it was later reinstated with a historical introduction. Oscar-winning screenwriter John Ridley has pointed out that the film acknowledges the horrors of slavery but ultimately engages in a form of celebration of the antebellum era.

The film, based on Margaret Mitchell’s novel, follows Scarlett O’Hara, the daughter of a plantation owner, as she navigates love and loss during the tumultuous period of the Civil War. With a runtime of nearly four hours, “Gone with the Wind” won eight Academy Awards in 1940, including Best Picture. Hattie McDaniel made history as the first Black actor to win an Oscar for her role in the film.

Despite its acclaim, people criticize the film for its romanticized depiction of the South and its failure to accurately represent the brutality of slavery. Fox News Digital reached out to Netflix for a comment on the backlash but has yet to receive a reply.
