Sesame Street Coming to Netflix
Long-time favorites for kids and a staple on PBS, Sesame Street, is set to make its debut on Netflix, as announced on Monday.
Netflix revealed that the beloved children’s show will start streaming later this year, but it will also remain available on PBS and its associated apps.
Sesame Workshop expressed enthusiasm about this partnership, noting that it will leverage Netflix’s global platform to deliver research-based educational content to young audiences worldwide. This way, children in diverse communities across the U.S. can still enjoy public television offerings.
The show will introduce a new format, shifting from its traditional 30-minute episodes to shorter, 11-minute stories.
This agreement follows the conclusion of the show’s prior contract with Warner Bros. Discovery, which began airing the series in 2016.
The deal comes on the heels of attempts by the Trump administration to slash federal funding for PBS, a key partner in the show’s production.
Recently, it was reported that these federal cuts have already led to notable downsizing efforts within the organization.
President and CEO Shelley Rollins Westin commented on the situation, stating that the main expense for the workshop is personnel and benefits. She noted that significant reductions are needed to ensure the workshop can continue its mission moving forward, though the impact on staff is obviously challenging.
