“We'd go to Lakers games together, go on road trips, dress up in costumes and surprise each other at random little bars,” Ferrell said of his relationship with Steele before she transitioned. But after her transition, Ferrell worried their closeness would end, so he came up with the idea of a road trip to answer some questions about their decades-long friendship.

“What if we went on a road trip together and I had her go to cowboy bars and places that she misses and I was there for her and supported her as a friend,” Ferrell told the streamer. “But at the same time, it would be a chance for us to reconnect and figure out what this change means for our relationship.”

Steele also argued that living exclusively on the East or West Coast is not optimal.

“I didn't want to come out in a place like New York or Los Angeles and just live on one coast forever,” Steele said. “I love the whole country. It's my country, so I wanted to feel a little more comfortable there, and I thought traveling around the country with Will Ferrell would help me,” Steele explained.

“Ultimately, the main reason I wanted to do this was because I thought, 'This might help other people,'” Steele continued. “I try to think of that with any work that I put out. Anything that I make or anything that I'm involved with, I think, 'I hope this helps people in some way, or makes them laugh, or gets something out of them.'”

“We're thrilled by how audiences at Sundance have embraced the film,” the filmmakers said in a statement. “This is a film about the power of friendship and acceptance. We hope it will help change the culture.”
