Netflix Unveils Trailer for “The One About Matthew Perry”

Netflix has released a poignant new trailer for “The One About Matthew Perry,” providing a deep dive into the life of the late actor who captured hearts across the globe.

Launched on September 29, the teaser highlights the severe challenges Perry faced regarding addiction, which many weren’t aware of. It begins with a montage of photos and clips showcasing his various performances, along with segments of him expressing his aspirations to spread joy, all while grappling with his internal struggles.

“I was extremely happy when I got famous,” Perry reflects in an interview, adding, “Then I was like, ‘Uh-oh, this didn’t fix what’s inside me. This didn’t do what I thought it was gonna do.”

As recordings of Perry’s voice echoed, we see glimpses of his acting journey, including his pre-fame days as Chandler Bing on “Friends.” In one moment, he recounts, “I said God, you can do anything you want to me, just please — make me famous.” But he acknowledges, “But God did not forget about the other part.”

In a touching moment, Perry’s sister, Mia Perry Bowick, shares her thoughts for the first time since his passing. She notes, “My brother would talk about that feeling of emptiness or loneliness that he couldn’t quite fill,” highlighting the seriousness of his struggles, mentioning that he “spent $7 million trying to get sober — that’s how seriously he took his disease.”

Perry’s voice returns as he discusses the burden of his addiction, stating, “I had people telling me to stop, saying, ‘You’re going to kill yourself if you keep going like this … and I just didn’t know how.”

The documentary features insights from Perry’s longtime friends Roger Castillo and David Pressman, alongside those who worked with him on “The Whole Nine Yards” and “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.” It also includes perspectives from two individuals he became close to in rehab, including Terry Harrington, who claims that Perry had a transformative influence on him, crediting him with saving his life.

His friends discussed how he would like to be remembered. “When he made people laugh, it made him feel good,” his sister said.

The documentary celebrates Perry’s iconic role in “Friends,” cleverly referencing the show with title nods like “The One About Laughter” and “The One About A Friend.” However, it was noted that none of his co-stars from the popular series participated in the making of the documentary.

Set to premiere on October 27, the documentary will come just a day before the third anniversary of Perry’s tragic death.
