Struggles of the Sussexes’ Netflix Partnership
Nearly six years after a significant deal with Netflix, the relationship between the streaming service and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex seems to be on shaky ground.
According to a Netflix source, the mood is that “It’s over.” There have been noticeable tensions during meetings, and mixed reviews for shows like With Love, Meghan Markle have raised doubts about whether e-commerce might be the best avenue for Netflix to work with the couple. Compounding the situation are claims of a “lack of communication” between Archewell, their production company, and Netflix.
Their five-year agreement, which was reportedly worth up to $100 million, has not yielded the successes one might expect. Archewell Productions has struggled to deliver content that meets Netflix’s stringent criteria for quality.
Founded by Prince Harry and Meghan, Archewell Productions claims to focus on “thought-provoking and diverse stories.” However, much of their output has included shows that, while potentially interesting, have not been universally regarded as valuable. This includes a lifestyle program, With Love, Meghan, and a five-part documentary on polo.
One notable aspect is the reception of their inaugural documentary, which painted the Royal Family in a negative light. Critics have suggested that their strategy to gain notoriety has backfired, placing them in a less desirable position within the entertainment industry.
Interestingly, sources indicate that Netflix’s co-CEO, Ted Sarandos, mentioned he would prefer not to take phone calls with the Duchess unless a lawyer was present. The Netflix team denied this claim, calling it “completely inaccurate.”
Whether this is true or not, it does evoke a sense of skepticism. Observers are aware of the Sussexes’ past actions, raising questions about trust and motives.
Netflix isn’t the only venue where the couple has encountered difficulties; they also signed a hefty podcast deal with Spotify, which drew criticism for not meeting expectations.
Comments from Spotify executive Bill Simmons encapsulate the sentiment of frustration, suggesting that the couple’s narrative was not resonating as they hoped. “You weren’t even a beloved son,” he reportedly remarked, reflecting on their status and relevance.
It’s perplexing why anyone thought this duo would generate blockbuster projects. Their history suggests a more complicated relationship with public perception and success, leading to the question: What will happen next?
