Nets Show Signs of Improvement

The Brooklyn Nets have been showing some positive changes recently, especially after their victory against the Celtics in Boston on November 21. They’ve managed to win the games they were expected to, and while they haven’t always clinched wins against stronger opponents, they’ve at least been competitive. As of their upcoming game in Dallas on Friday, the Nets have secured three wins in their last four matches.

Interestingly, they haven’t played since their win over New Orleans on Saturday, thanks to an unusual schedule created by the NBA Cup’s structure. This unexpected break hasn’t been easy to adjust to. Nick Claxton shared his thoughts after a practice in Brooklyn on Wednesday: “The days off are a little tough because you get used to the rhythm of playing every other day.”

During this time off, the team focused on making the most of their practice sessions, especially given their young and inexperienced lineup. Coach Jordi Fernandes emphasized the importance of self-care and using these days wisely: “Take care of your body and use a few days for rest and recovery… and try different concepts.”

As the season progresses, the Nets find themselves just over a quarter of the way through, holding a record of 6 wins and 17 losses. Coach Fernandes remarked on their progress, indicating a future focus: “We’ve only played 23 games, so we’re looking ahead to the next 20 games. Can we do better? Then we turn to the next 20 people. That process is the most important thing for us and for the growth of the group, not just one player.”

Things could get a little more dynamic in Brooklyn and across the league starting Monday, as players who signed before the season become eligible for trades. With their financial flexibility, the Nets may engage in some trade activity, potentially sending out younger players or draft picks in return.

Claxton compared the situation to a reality show, noting how changes could unfold: “It’s starting soon.” He, like Fernandes, underlined the importance of the current squad and the togetherness of the players. Claxton noted, “You’ll hear your name in trade rumors, you’ll see teammates come and go. Management will handle all that and work on it.”

Fernandes echoed Claxton’s sentiment, saying that while the trade season isn’t exactly enjoyable, the focus remains on improving as a team and competing. “We can’t control anything from the outside, even though we know things can happen… We want to work, we want responsibility, and we want a competitive edge. That’s what we focus on.”

On the defensive side, the Nets have witnessed a notable improvement as the season unfolds after a rocky start. Claxton acknowledged the challenges of integrating many new players: “Every team has its ups and downs, and it’s a long season. We have a lot of fresh faces and a lot of players who have never seen action in the NBA… We all had to understand that and be on the same page with our coaches. It’s starting to happen, but we must keep building.”
