Nets believe Josh Minott and Ochai Agbaji can play important roles in the team's rebuilding effort

Brooklyn Nets Trade Update

As the trade deadline rolled around on Thursday, the buzz in Brooklyn largely revolved around the potential release of Cam Thomas while Michael Porter Jr. would remain on the team.

However, what happens next hinges on how well the less-publicized newcomers, Josh Minott and Ochai Agbaji, adapt to the team’s evolving landscape. Recently, the Nets secured a 127-113 win against the Wizards at Barclays Center.

Coach Jordi Fernandes expressed confidence in the new additions, stating, “We know they are very good players, that’s why they are here. Show us what you can bring to this group. If you can be a part of this group, you could be the future of the Nets.”

Both Minott and Agbaji were available for the game against Washington, but surprisingly, neither stepped on the court. It’s worth noting that the Nets had no injury concerns affecting their roster, aside from their two-way players.

The Wizards, finishing in 8th place, brought some excitement to Nets fans, especially those who are content with a rebuilding season.

With a youthful roster looking to cultivate upcoming talent, both Minott and Agbaji have the opportunity to carve out specific roles. Minott, who’s only 23, mentioned, “For me, it’s about staying true to the values I learned over my three and a half years in the league, especially my work ethic. I’ve been on some championship teams. It’s about understanding what we did right and making a return to that standard.” He emphasized the importance of disruptive defense and noted, “My shooting has improved, and I believe in taking the right open shots.”

Scouts have highlighted Minott’s versatility, especially given his height at 6-foot-8 and solid 212-pound frame.

He initially joined the league as a second-round pick for Boston, quickly standing out for his athleticism and competitiveness, averaging 10.4 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.4 steals during a strong stretch this season. However, a significant ankle injury sidelined him for several weeks, resulting in lost playing time to other teammates. With Boston facing a roster crunch, the Nets acquired him with minimal cost, sending only a small cash consideration.

Now in Brooklyn, he aims to regain the momentum that initially earned him minutes in Boston. “I bring that hunger and desperation,” he shared. “This organization values disruptive thinking. We aim to be leaders in points off turnovers, so I’m here to contribute.”

Agbaji, at 25, enters with more experience from stints with Utah and Toronto. His recent performance, however, included just 4.3 points and 2.3 rebounds, a stark contrast to a more productive preseason. “For me, it’s about getting back to who I know I can be,” he stated. “My defense and intensity on the court are key to my game. I’ve got a lot more to show, and I had a great season last year, so I’m eager to build on that.”

Agbaji reflected on his time at Kansas, where he won an NCAA title alongside teammate Jalen Wilson. “I accepted his recruiting visit. I’ve known him for a long time, and it’s great to be teammates again. It feels more like home here.”
