Nets filling open roster spots after Ben Simmons buyout

The Nets are finalizing a new contract with two-way Tyrese Martin ahead of their match against Cleveland on Thursday night, sources told the Post.

Martin was no longer eligible to appear in the Brooklyn game under his current two-way contract, so they had no choice but to turn him into a standard deal.

They had an open roster location after buying Ben Simmons, so they deserved Martin in the move the Post reported first.

“No one deserves it more than he,” coach Jordi Fernandez said. “He worked throughout the summer, he's about what we're trying to build here, he helps us build a culture.

“He had a big game, but most importantly, he's right. He works every day, gets better, we love him. We love him around here. That's why I'm extremely proud of him and I make him happy.”

Brooklyn also abandoned the injured Bodjan Bogdanovic after choosing to undergo season-ending foot surgery.

The move was first reported by ESPN and confirmed by posting.

He left two open standard roster spots on the net, one filled by handing Martin and the other to Killian Hayes on a 10-day contract. All ESPN.

Martin had reached the limit of 50 games where the net was allowed in two directions, so to use him later in the season they had to turn him into a standard deal.

He became a valuable rotation piece. With an appearance (36) and a 9th minute (757), he was placed 9th (757) just behind Dennis Schroeder and Simmons, who left.

“[Martin] You have to continue doing what he is doing. So he won what he got. You don't need to see something completely different,” Fernandez said. “It's just working and working along the lines we established in his agreement. I think that's what we need. We need continuity. That's why we reward continuity. That's why, because that's everything we do.”

Bogdanovic has not played since April 28th last year since he suffered a left foot injury during the Knicks' first-round series victory in Philadelphia.

He was already suffering from a wrist injury and had surgery to repair both.

In July, Bogdanovic was included as a salary filler for Mikal Bridges Trade.

But he was never suitable for the net, but he has made progress even with his work on the court recently, but still wasn't close to play.

Bogdanovic, who turned 36 on April 18th, opted for end-of-season surgery.

“He showed up here every day and did an amazing job trying to get healthy,” Fernandez said. “Unfortunately, he couldn't get to that point and decided to have surgery. … And we clearly have full support for him.” And that's what we went. Sometimes it's not the way you want to do it. “He tried to do it the way he had surgery, he wanted to come back, he worked, he was around the team, he was great energy and great advice. everyone. He was really, he was part of this group. At this point he had to make this decision. Again, he has full support for us, and we believe he is trying to get what he wants, what he needs. ”

All the net needs is more help with backup point guard.

Since the acquisition of Simmons, they have used forward Trendon Watford to back up starter Dangelo Russell.

Two-way point guard Lees Beekman has been unable to grab the position on 20 appearances since arriving on December 15th, averaging 10.9 minutes and averaging 2.2 points. And develop it.

Meanwhile, Hayes is signed to Brooklyn.

The 23-year-old point guard has improved in the G-League, averaging 21 points and 8.3 assists on Long Island.

However, since Hayes is not eligible for two-way based on too much service time, Nets added the previous No. 7 overall pick on his 10-day contract.
