Nets give Malachi Smith a two-year contract after a challenging path to the NBA.

The Brooklyn Nets have officially signed guard Malachi Smith to a two-year deal as of Saturday.

This is a classic example of perseverance paying off. Smith went undrafted in 2023 and faced challenges playing in the G League. However, after a strong performance on Long Island, he secured two 10-day contracts that eventually led to a full contract. The news was initially reported by ESPN and later confirmed.

Smith expressed his gratitude following a recent loss to the Hawks, saying, “It was like a blessing.” He reflected on his journey, which has been anything but straightforward. “I think this just highlights my work ethic,” he added. Smith mentioned he aims to maintain his current game play, staying grateful and focused on the fundamentals that got him this far. “Physically, I’m quicker and more athletic, and I’m processing the game faster, but at the end, it’s still basketball. So, I just want to keep having fun and control what I can.”

In his two 10-day stints with the Nets, Smith averaged 7.3 points and 2.1 rebounds, providing valuable support off the bench.

He really ignited the team even more than he did against Atlanta. There was this notable five-minute stretch where he went 4-of-4 shooting and 3-of-3 from three-point range, narrowing the Nets’ deficit to four points early in the second quarter. He even sank a buzzer-beater from well beyond the half-court line.

Smith shared, “I think the mindset is to leave everything on the floor. I’ve prayed and worked for this chance, so I won’t take it for granted.” He emphasized that regardless of playing time—be it one minute or ten—he finds peace knowing he gave his all.

The signing of Smith comes as the Nets look poised to secure a top three spot in the draft lottery. Following a comeback victory by the Kings over the Pelicans, Brooklyn now holds a 2.5-game lead over both Sacramento and Utah.

For the Nets to move into a tie for fourth place, they need to improve to 3-2, and they require either the Kings or Jazz to lose. It’s worth noting they’ve only achieved three wins since February 10th.
