Nets lose draft lottery chance with victory against Wizards

Nets Edge Out Wizards in Thrilling Comeback

In an exciting finish at Barclays Center, the Nets triumphed over the Wizards with a score of 121-115, thrilling the crowd of 17,257 fans. This victory was significant, allowing the Nets to inch closer to the Wizards in the crucial lottery standings.

This win bumped the Pacers to third place, placing them two games behind the Wizards and just a half-game ahead of Indiana, pending their matchup with Cleveland.

With a record of 19-59, the Nets have upcoming games against Milwaukee on Tuesday and the Pacers on Thursday. They maintain a two-game lead over both the Jazz and Kings, as Utah’s game versus the reigning champs, OKC, and Sacramento’s matchup against the Clippers are still to be played.

A pivotal moment came when Jamil Watkins sank a 3-pointer, giving the Nets a 105-101 lead with just 3:50 left on the clock. They then went on an impressive 8-0 run to secure the lead for good.

Point guard Nolan Traore, despite showing signs of fatigue typical for a rookie, led the team with 23 points and seven assists. His clutch 3-pointer with 2:56 remaining tied the game at 105 before he added a crucial basket shortly after, extending the lead to four.

With a minute and fifteen seconds left, Traore nailed another 3-pointer, pushing the score to 115-108. The Wizards, on the other hand, find themselves in a tough spot, having lost six consecutive games, which puts them at 17-61. They are now 1.5 games behind Indiana and two games back from the Nets in the lottery race.

The Nets fielded a starting lineup that included rookies Traore, Drake Powell, and undrafted Chaney Johnson, alongside Jalen Wilson and EJ Liddell. This lineup held strong against a depleted Wizards team that had only eight active players for the game.

The Nets started strong, quickly establishing a commanding 32-15 lead thanks to free throws from Josh Minott with just 2:31 remaining in the first quarter.

In the third quarter, a foul shot from Traore gave the Nets an 84-78 advantage with less than a minute to go in the period. However, they allowed an 11-1 run during that stretch and found themselves trailing for the first time when Will Riley, who scored a game-high 30 points, put the Wizards ahead 86-85 just 36 seconds into the fourth quarter. Watkins soon increased that lead to 89-85, but the Nets managed to rally back.

Injury reports revealed that Ben Saraf, Terrence Mann, and Noah Clowney were already sidelined before the game, while Giare Williams and others continued to heal from various injuries.
