Brooklyn Nets Rookie Insights

Egor Demin ranks 11th in games played among NBA rookies this season, while his teammate Drake Powell sits at 16th. It’s an interesting dynamic to see these new players gaining experience at this level.

Ben Saraf, when fit, typically averages around 13.9 minutes per game, placing him 27th in the league. That number says a lot about his role, though it’s not quite standout just yet.

This season looks like it’s heading toward another tough one for the Nets. Head coach Jordi Fernandez has a challenging job ahead of him, trying to keep the team competitive, at least in spirit—as they’ve shown in their last four games—while also providing ample playing time for the rookies to help them hone their skills.

Veterans like Michael Porter Jr. will play a crucial role in ensuring the team maintains some dignity throughout this challenging period.

Fernandez highlighted after Tuesday’s loss to the Celtics that building for the future remains a priority. Despite losing Jayson Tatum to a significant injury, he insists the team is still solid—even if the win-loss column might not reflect it.

“Many of you in the media might not see much in the way of wins,” Fernandez remarked. “We aim high. Winning is important to us, but also, it’s about giving our younger players minutes on teams that are winning, if that makes sense. We’ve got to find ways to improve our guys. The last four games have seen us play some good basketball. If we keep it up, we’ll just have to accept whatever comes our way,” he added with a hint of optimism.

Looking ahead, it seems the next five games might not lead to significant improvements, especially as they face Eastern Conference teams that are currently above .500.

Demin, drafted 8th overall, is meeting expectations as an effective shooter and passer, though he struggles a bit when it comes to physical play around the rim or solid defensive efforts. There’s room for growth, that’s for sure.

As for Powell, he mentioned he’s still acclimating to the NBA’s pace which, interestingly, isn’t exactly what one might think. He feels more comfortable with the faster pace Fernandez wants, recalling that he thrived at North Carolina under similar conditions. It seems this shift could benefit both his game and the team’s overall performance.

But it’s not all about the young players. Porter stated that the Nets have been showing some competitive spirit over recent games. “This is a great chance for us all,” he shared, when asked about trying to uplift a less experienced roster. “It’s a collective effort. We’re all learning and growing together. We’ve really taken strides since our earlier games this season, which is definitely encouraging.”
