Nets Snap Losing Streak with Narrow Win Over Bulls
It wasn’t their best performance, but it was just enough to end a challenging run. Brooklyn barely managed to escape with a 112-109 victory against Chicago, finally putting an end to the league’s longest losing streak. The game took place at a packed Barclays Center, where 17,548 fans cheered on Friday night.
Michael Porter Jr. led the scoring, finishing with a game-high 26 points, culminating in a crucial layup with just five seconds left. The Nets, however, faced a tense finish after relinquishing a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter. They required a late steal by rookie Drake Powell to secure the win, turning a potential comedy of errors into a poignant moment for the team.
Brooklyn had led 92-72 in the fourth quarter and held an 108-102 advantage with just 1:20 remaining, only to watch the Bulls rally and momentarily take the lead. But crucially, Porter responded with a critical basket, while Powell’s defensive play sealed the deal.
Porter remarked post-game, “This is how a losing team can become a winning team,” reflecting on the significance of their hard-fought victory.
Alongside Porter, Noah Clowney contributed with 23 points and 11 rebounds, helping the Nets improve their record to 12 wins and 27 losses, while the Bulls fell to 19-22.
This night was particularly crucial in the standings, with all the teams ranked above Brooklyn facing off. The Pacers, currently at the bottom of the league, secured a victory over the Pelicans, who had just beat the Nets two days prior. Later, the Sacramento Kings were set to host the Washington Wizards, making for an intense night of matchups.
Despite their struggles lately, including an eight-game slide prior to this win, the Nets had shown promise between December 1st and December 27th, going 7-3 with an impressive defensive rating. However, inconsistencies have plagued them since, leading to their newfound difficulties. Their defense, noted as once being the best, has now slipped to the 26th in the league.
The way they clinched this victory was pivotal. Brooklyn controlled the game with a solid 19-2 run in the second quarter, showcasing effective defensive play. By the end of the first half, they had built a substantial lead of 57-38.
In the fourth quarter, rookie Nolan Traore’s three-pointer pushed their lead to 20, but a series of missed shots allowed the Bulls to cut the deficit significantly. At one moment, Chicago’s Nikola Vucevic sparked his team with a three-pointer, bringing the game within two points. Even as Porter managed to counter with another three, the closing moments remained frenetic.
Ultimately, Porter’s driving layup put the Nets ahead with mere seconds on the clock, while Powell’s clutch steal ensured they wouldn’t be pushed into overtime.
