Nets secure the eighth pick in the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery

The Nets faced a lackluster outcome in their first lottery appearance in 15 years, landing the eighth pick in the recent NBA Draft lottery in Chicago.

This result translates to having the sixth-best odds for a high draft pick, following Brooklyn general manager Sean Marks and team owner Joe Tsai’s decision to tank for this season’s pick.

While the team aimed to rebuild around a player like Cooper Flag, they only had a 9% chance to win big.

Ultimately, they dropped to eighth place, which, given their expectations, is quite disappointing.

This recent outcome follows a pattern, being the second closest result to a 7th pick scenario.

It’s been a tough pill to swallow considering they’ve traded multiple first-round picks to Houston in acquiring this year’s and next year’s first-round selections.

This strategy was supposed to aid their rebuilding efforts, primarily around Mikal Bridges. Yet, after a challenging 26-56 season, they hoped to rank in at least the top four.

Sadly, that didn’t materialize, and they missed their chance.

This eighth pick marks their only lottery selection since 2010. Back then, they aimed for John Wall but ended up with Derrick Favors instead after falling to third.

First-year head coach Jordi Fernandez expressed an eagerness for good fortune ahead of the lottery, although luck didn’t seem to be on their side this time.

It’s a bit surreal how often they find themselves in this scenario, both in their current Brooklyn chapter and during their New Jersey days.

Disappointments in the lottery have become a hallmark, often stemming from trades that didn’t pan out.

Recent picks, like Damian Lillard (2012), Jalen Brown (2016), and Jason Tatum (2017), have all slipped through their fingers, benefiting other teams.

Even last year’s pick, which soared to third, was owed to Houston.

Monday’s lottery was a moment to reflect on all that misfortune.

Currently, the Nets are in a strong position with the most future draft picks (31) and first-round slots (15) over the next seven years, including four in the upcoming draft.

Marks noted in the team’s documentary series, “Scout,” that such an opportunity is unprecedented.

However, landing eighth could hinder potential trades involving stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo, despite them having a wealth of first-round picks available for trade.

Meanwhile, Dallas defied the odds by winning the lottery, achieving a remarkable turnaround after a surprising trade involving Luka Doncic.

The Spurs secured the second pick, positioning themselves to select standout Dylan Harper or create a promising deal alongside their 14th pick.
