WASHINGTON — Cam Thomas scored 38 points, including two jumpers in overtime, and the Brooklyn Nets held off Washington 122-119 on Wednesday night, ending the Wizards’ modest winning streak by three.
Jordan Poole scored a season-high 38 points for Washington, but missed a potential tying 3-pointer late in overtime.
Dorian Finney-Smith had a chance to stop the game for Brooklyn with 4.3 seconds left, but missed two free throws.
However, the Wizards took a timeout and, after securing the rebound, lost control of the ball when Washington’s Deni Avdija tried to quickly dribble up the court.
The game began shortly after Wizards owner Ted Leonsis touted a new deal in a press conference that would keep the NBA team and the NHL’s Capitals in the District of Columbia.
Plans to move them to Virginia failed.
This bit of news comes at a peak of sorts for the Wizards. The Wizards needed until late January to achieve their first two-game winning streak, but have been unable to extend that winning streak until now.
The Nets, who probably won’t make the playoffs, and the Wizards, who definitely won’t make the playoffs, played a close and entertaining game after Washington rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second quarter.
Both teams had a chance to win within regulation.
With the score tied at 112, Avdija’s shot was blocked by Nick Claxton.
Brooklyn then took a turn without taking a timeout, and Dennis Schroder missed a 3-pointer in the final minute.
Two perimeter shots from Thomas gave the Nets a 118-112 advantage before Washington made its final push.
Corey Kispert had a chance to tie it when he went to the line with 13.5 seconds left, but missed the second of two free throws and Schroder made two on the other end.
