Nets Secure Close Win Over Hornets

The NBA season kicked off with a face-off between two teams struggling for better standings: the Nets and the Hornets. Their previous encounter had seen the Nets lose by 19 points, leading many to think they might struggle throughout the season.

This time, the game stayed tight, and after 11 lead changes, the Nets managed to break their four-game losing streak, ultimately leading 116-103 at Barclays Center.

Michael Porter Jr. showcased his best 3-point shooting performance of the season. The Nets held their largest lead of seven points by the end of the third quarter, thanks in part to rookie players Drake Powell and Ben Saraf, although keeping that lead would prove challenging.

As the game wound down, the Hornets closed the gap to just three points within the final four minutes. But, a pivotal 3-pointer from Porter, followed by a dunk from Noah Clowney, gave the Nets a 10-point cushion with less than five minutes left, shifting the energy in the arena.

And they didn’t stop there. Danny Wolf, who had been relatively quiet until the fourth quarter, scored multiple 3-pointers, including a crucial dunk, stretching their lead to 114-100 with nearly two minutes remaining. This performance marked one of the team’s strongest efforts of the season, as they maintained control from that point onward.

Porter was the standout player, leading the Nets with 35 points, shooting an impressive 7-of-11 from beyond the arc.

Claxton contributed significantly with 13 points and 11 rebounds, marking his fifth double-double of the season, while Clowney added 18 points. Interestingly, while the Hornets’ bench outscored the Nets’, Brooklyn’s substitutes provided key minutes, with Powell contributing 10 points, four assists, and three steals, and Saraf adding a vital 3-pointer in the third quarter.

The start of the game was a bit shaky, with Conn Knuppel hitting his first 3-pointer and the Nets unsure of how to respond defensively. As the action unfolded, both teams exchanged leads, with Charlotte’s hesitance benefiting the Nets, who committed 11 turnovers, allowing 17 points off those mistakes in the first half.

Porter, returning from an injury, scored 17 points in the opening half. He played a pivotal role in keeping the Nets competitive, even sinking a shot that pulled them within one point, followed by a steal that led to a dunk by Egor Demin, giving the Nets a brief 55-54 lead. However, that lead was fleeting, as Knuppel struck again from deep. By halftime, Clowney managed to tie the game at 59-59 with a late layup.
