Nevada’s Lombardo backs Trump despite pledge to stay out of primary

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo (R) said Thursday that he will support former President Trump in the state's scheduled caucuses. promise not to go out Republican presidential primary.

lombardo told the Nevada Independent Trump also announced that he would not vote for any of the above in the state's primary, where he is not on the ballot.

Due to a protracted legal battle between the state and the Nevada Republican Party, Nevada will hold its caucuses and primaries on February 8th and 6th, respectively. Only the results of the caucuses will determine the delegates who will elect the Republican nominee.

Mr. Trump supported Mr. Lombardo in the 2022 gubernatorial election and campaigned for him.

“We need decisive leadership from President Trump as he returns to Washington, D.C.,” Lombardo said in a statement to The Hill. “President Trump has overseen record economic success, implemented a strong foreign policy, and ensured that our nation's law enforcement officers are treated with the respect they deserve.”

The governor said in September that he would not endorse him in the presidential primary, but dismissed that idea Thursday.

“For all practical purposes…the race is over,” he said.

Trump has a wide lead in national polls over his Republican rivals, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. His approval rating is about 62 percent, according to an average of The Hill/Decision Desk polls.

The only Silver State poll of this year's race released so far this year by a small sample from Emerson College showed Mr. Trump leading his opponent by 65 points with 73% support.
