New $1 Coin Design Features President Trump
This past Wednesday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent introduced a new design for the $1 coin that prominently features President Trump’s likeness. He described it as a gesture honoring the 250th anniversary of the United States. According to Bessent, the U.S. Mint will start producing this coin soon.
He mentioned in a post on X, “To commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, @usmint is launching this new $1 gold coin to honor our enduring legacy of freedom and the symbols of patriotism.” He emphasized that the coin is meant to celebrate American values and the commitment to freedom for all.
The coin’s front displays a portrait of President Trump, along with the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the years “1776–2026.”
On the back, the U.S. coat of arms appears, accompanied by the number “250” and the face value of “$1” displayed on the shield.
This coin is issued under the Circulating Collected Coin Redesign Act of 2020, which enables the Treasury Secretary to authorize a $1 coin design symbolizing this year’s 250th anniversary, as per the Treasury Department.
A spokesperson from the Treasury indicated that a legal review from both the U.S. Mint and the department confirmed the design aligns with federal law, which generally restricts coins from featuring living individuals.
The minting will take place in Philadelphia, with rolls and bags of the new currency expected to be available this fall.
Interestingly, despite being called a gold coin, it will not actually contain any gold, as noted by the Treasury Department.
Additionally, there’s some historical context here. They pointed out that President Calvin Coolidge was featured on the 1926 Centennial Half Dollar while he was in office. This was significant because it marked the first time a sitting president appeared on a U.S. coin, authorized by Congress to support the 150th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia.
