Reclaiming Halloween’s Spiritual Roots

With Halloween just around the corner, many families are bustling to find the perfect costumes and spooktacular decorations. But Anthony DeStefano, an author known for his Christian-based works for both adults and children, wants families to consider a different perspective: the authentic spiritual significance of Halloween.

“In writing this story, I aimed to contribute to reclaiming what Halloween truly represents: a deeply spiritual occasion focused on prayer, repentance, and remembering the departed,” he explained. DeStefano adds that he seeks to provide an engaging way for children and their parents to celebrate this holiday in a faith-oriented manner while still enjoying the fun and mystery that Halloween brings.

As service and spending for Halloween reach new heights—projected to hit $13.1 billion in 2025, as per the National Retail Federation—DeStefano expresses concern that modern celebrations are distancing themselves from Halloween’s traditional roots. He contends that recent events, like the death of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk and the tragic mass shooting at a Catholic church in Minneapolis, serve as stark reminders of the real threats facing those who express their faith openly.

“I believe these incidents are not isolated,” he remarked. “They illustrate a deeper antagonism toward faith, evident in the attitudes of Hollywood, legacy media, academia, and the left, which have long derided religion.”

DeStefano is clear that Halloween shouldn’t be about glorifying darkness. Instead, it should serve to acknowledge life, death, and the triumph of eternal life. “It’s powerful if we capture it right,” he said.

The author warns that the current cultural trend is leaning toward a “festival of evil,” which he believes could be detrimental. Halloween has long been associated with ghost stories, haunted houses, and tales of curses; a lot of which can numb our moral judgment.

Describing his book, “All Hallows’ Eve,” he reveals it tells the story of friends meeting an enigmatic old woman who tends to graves at night. She prays for the souls trapped in purgatory, educating children on the holiday’s true purpose.

According to Catholic teachings, purgatory is a transitional state for the soul before it reaches heaven. The days encompassing Halloween, All Saints’ Day, and All Souls’ Day are interlinked and symbolize a time of honoring saints and praying for the dead.

Despite concerns about commercialization, DeStefano encourages families to enjoy the holiday’s traditions while also imparting lessons about its origins and the importance of remembering those who have passed away.

He believes the holiday can also be a beacon of hope, suggesting that the costumes can remind us to pray for loved ones who have died. “Even after losing someone dear, we will eventually reunite in heaven,” he shared. “That’s the essence of this holiday.”
