New Clinic in Chicago Provides Third Trimester Abortions

A clinic is set to open in Chicago, Illinois, that will provide abortions during the third trimester of pregnancy.

Hope Clinic launched its second location in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood on June 2nd and has been advertising for “all-semester” abortions, as reported.

“Hope Clinic is now open in Chicago, Illinois, and we’re thrilled to expand care across all stages! Every individual deserves access to abortion care, and determining what’s best for you shouldn’t depend on someone else’s timeline,” the clinic shared in a post on social media.

According to the clinic’s website, the Chicago location offers surgical abortions for women up to 34 weeks pregnant. At this stage, babies can weigh around 5 pounds, and research indicates they can have similar long-term health outcomes as those born full-term.

This clinic is the only standalone facility of its kind in the Midwest, offering rare services during the later stages of pregnancy, with just a few such clinics available across the country.

Under the Illinois Reproductive Health Act, abortion is permissible for maternal health and well-being up to a specific fetal survival rate, including various health factors. The law acknowledges both physical and psychological health concerns.

The clinic has highlighted that some women may only become aware of fetal abnormalities later or may have difficulty accessing care early on in their pregnancies. Others might not want to continue with a pregnancy at all.

Dr. Elinking, the chief medical officer at Hope Clinic, emphasized the importance of adhering to state laws while striving to offer comprehensive care. “We fully comply with the law, but we’re very committed to providing as much access as possible within those boundaries,” she stated.

Nne O’Connor, a legal affairs representative from the National Institute for Advocates of Families and Life, expressed concerns about the clinic’s practices, deeming late-term abortions as “particularly scary and unnecessary.” She noted the troubling reality that in the U.S., such practices are legal in a few places, likening it to the conditions in countries like China and Vietnam.

Hope Clinic reassured that they will follow Illinois regulations and provide compassionate care, stressing that it’s vital to offer all treatment options to individuals facing pregnancy-related health complications. The organization argues that access to quality healthcare during pregnancy should be unrestricted.

Polls indicate that many Americans oppose legal abortion during the second (55 percent) and third (70 percent) trimesters of pregnancy.
