New Coins Released for America’s 250th Birthday

U.S. Mint to Celebrate 250th Anniversary with New Coins

In 2026, the United States will mark its 250th anniversary, often referred to as the semiquincentennial, with a special series of circulating coins from the U.S. Mint. These coins will honor the nation’s founding.

What You Need to Know

On December 10, the U.S. Mint unveiled its circulating coin program for 2026 at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. This collection will feature nickels, dimes, and quarters, alongside collectible half dollars and pennies. Each of these coins will display designs reflecting America’s journey toward “a more perfect union,” as the country approaches its milestone birthday on July 4, 2026.

The nickel, dime, and quarter will showcase a double date, “1776-2026,” alongside images that represent significant events and documents in American history—think of the Mayflower Compact and the Declaration of Independence—paired with powerful symbols like the Statue of Liberty and the bald eagle.

Meanwhile, the half dollar will transform into an uncirculated collectible, marking its first major redesign since the bicentennial in 1976. One side will feature a close-up of the Statue of Liberty, while the reverse will illustrate her passing the torch to future generations, a nod to the nation’s continuity.

The penny will keep its current design but will also feature the double date: “1776-2026,” and will only be available in collector sets, not in circulation.

Additionally, collectible coins such as the American Buffalo, American Eagle, and the Morgan & Peace series will include the Liberty Bell Private Mark adorned with the number “250” and dual dates. The Mint’s Best of the Mint set will reissue five historic gold coins, such as the 1916 Mercury Dime and the 1907 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, each accompanied by a silver medallion reflecting a modern interpretation of the original design.

The new coins will be struck at U.S. Mint facilities located in Philadelphia and Denver. Congress approved this design for one year, after which $45.50 from the sale will be directed toward youth and Paralympic sports initiatives until 2030.

People’s Opinions

Christy McNally, Acting Director of the U.S. Mint, remarked: “The designs on these historic coins tell the story of America’s journey towards a ‘more perfect union’ and celebrate America’s defining ideals of freedom. In Connecting America through Coins, we want to give each American the opportunity to hold our nation’s storied 250 years of history in the palm of their hands.”

What Happens Next

The U.S. Mint indicates that these coins will begin general circulation in early January 2026 and will be available for purchase either individually, in collector sets, or as part of a commemorative release.
