New Ebola outbreak in Congo claims 65 lives as authorities look into virus strain

Ebola Outbreak Confirmed in Congo

A new Ebola outbreak has been confirmed in Congo, with the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting 65 deaths and 246 suspected cases in the remote Ituri province as of Friday.

Health officials are currently looking into whether the strain involved is the fatal and widely known version of the Ebola virus or a different variant. In neighboring Uganda, there has been one confirmed Ebola-related death of a Congolese man, indicating the virus was carried over from Congo.

This outbreak appears to be focused in the Monwar and Rwampara health zones in eastern Congo, close to the Ugandan and South Sudan borders. Authorities are concerned that ongoing mining activities, poor infrastructure, and persistent insecurity could increase the risk of community spread.

Ebola is a highly infectious and often deadly disease transmitted through bodily fluids such as blood, vomit, and semen. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle ache, and internal bleeding.

So far, only four of the reported deaths have been confirmed through laboratory tests. Efforts are ongoing to refine testing and sequencing to identify the specific strain involved. Initial results suggest that the outbreak might not involve the Zaire strain, which was responsible for a severe outbreak in Congo between 2018 and 2020 that claimed over 1,000 lives.

The World Health Organization has sent a team to assist local authorities in investigating the outbreak and gathering samples. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted Congo’s strong history in handling Ebola outbreaks and announced an emergency fund of $500,000 to aid containment efforts.

Local health officials have stockpiled Ebola treatments and around 2,000 doses of the El Bebo vaccine; however, this vaccine is only effective against the Zaire strain, not the Sudanese or Bundibugyo variants.

This marks the 17th Ebola outbreak recorded in Congo since the virus was first discovered there in 1976.
