New FCC collaboration seeks to prevent communications equipment related to the CCP

FCC and Attorneys General Collaborate on Communications Security

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), along with attorneys general from four states, is set to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at improving information sharing and oversight of high-risk communications technologies.

A draft of this memorandum reveals intentions to enhance consumer protections by concentrating on telecommunications equipment and services—specifically those linked to China or influenced by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

The agreement, involving officials from Nebraska, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia, is expected to be finalized soon, as confirmed by the FCC. Chairman Brendan Carr recently met with these state attorneys general.

This initiative marks a significant collaboration between federal and state authorities to share insights on communications technologies tied to China, tackle security threats, and protect consumers from vulnerable devices while also addressing efficiency gaps in enforcement.

The FCC stated, “The Chairman actively works with state attorneys general across the country to advance national security.”

After the meeting, Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers expressed optimism about closer cooperation with the federal government to mitigate risks posed by Chinese technologies. He said, “We are taking decisive action to keep Communist China out of our homes and networks,” indicating that this partnership aims to disrupt harmful Chinese influence in U.S. communication systems.

Concerns have risen about the Chinese government’s potential exploitation of its technologies to jeopardize U.S. security and secure a position within critical networks. Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have voiced warnings about the Chinese government’s use of various avenues—like educational exchanges and business investments—as means for espionage in American communications.
