A hypothermic Kentucky man set out on New Hampshire’s Mount Washington unprepared Thursday, fell off the trail, hit his head and lost his sneakers, officials said. He was reportedly rescued.

According to New Hampshire Fish and Game, the 23-year-old man, identified as Joabe Barbosa of Georgetown, Kentucky, was hiking when he veered off the trail and entered Ammonoosook Canyon around 6:45 p.m.

“While descending into the ravine, Barboza fell and hit his head and face, lost one of his sneakers, and eventually suffered from hypothermia,” the station said in a statement.

Barbosa called 911 for help, and authorities used GPS coordinates to locate the hiker.

“Coordinates showed Barbosa to be north of the Ammonoosk Valley Trail at approximately 3,600 feet elevation and well off the drainage valley trail along one of the tributaries of the Ammonoosk River,” according to NH Fish and Game. Ta.

Conservation officers and volunteer paramedics from Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue arrived in Barbosa just before 10:30 p.m., the agency said.

Rescuers provided Barboza with boots, food, hot drinks, proper winter clothing and a headlamp and took him back to the trail.

“Mr. Barbosa was not prepared for removal,” the N.H. Fish and Game Law Enforcement Division said in a statement.

Just over three hours after finding Barbosa, the group arrived at the Cog Railroad base station, where Barbosa received initial treatment for his injuries.
