New House bill may enhance the close ties between the US and UK

Military Technology Sharing Bill Introduced by House Republicans

In honor of the 81st anniversary of D-Day, House Republicans have proposed a bill aimed at enhancing military technology collaboration between the US and the UK. Rep. Mark Green introduced the legislation, stating, “we will never forget their friendship.”

The proposed Special Relations Military Improvement Act of 2025 is designed to strengthen the relationship between the US and one of its closest allies. Green emphasized the need for sharing technological advancements, especially amid rising global tensions and conflicts.

During the announcement, he remarked, “On this significant anniversary, I am reintroducing the Special Relations Military Improvement Act of 2025.” He stressed that the sacrifices made by allied soldiers during the D-Day and Normandy invasions had ensured freedom for many people, and he believes the best way to honor their memory is by reinforcing partnerships with the UK.

Currently, under international transport regulations concerning arms, military technology sold to foreign governments is generally retained exclusively by the US. While Canada has some exemptions to these rules, the UK does not.

The new bill seeks to amend the Arms Export Control Act to allow for these exemptions, facilitating the sharing of advances in military technology with the UK. Green called for a pragmatic approach in sharing military advancements with close allies, stating, “The United States and the United Kingdom will collaborate to share intelligence, combat global terrorism, and strive for peace using our combined military resources.”

He noted that the anniversary holds personal significance for him as a D-Day veteran and former commander of the 82nd Airborne division. Green added that during the 80th anniversary of D-Day, he was honored to jump out of the same type of aircraft that was used in the original operation.

“American and British soldiers have stood together for over a century,” Green acknowledged. “There’s no stronger ally than the UK. Our bond is pivotal in these times.”

Green also reflected on past events, stating, “On the beaches of Normandy, it was British soldiers fighting alongside Americans,” and recalled Britain’s prompt support after the 9/11 attacks, when they sent troops to Afghanistan to assist in combating the Taliban.

Summing up the importance of the partnership, he concluded, “Now more than ever, we will not forget their friendship.”
