New information surfaces in the death of a guest at Universal's Epic Universe theme park

New information has emerged regarding the tragic death of a man who became unresponsive while on the Stardust Racer ride at Universal’s Epic Universe theme park.

The individual, identified as Kevin Rodriguez Zavala, 32, had a pre-existing spinal cord injury and utilized a wheelchair during his visit to the amusement park on Wednesday.

Zavala’s family has enlisted the help of civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who reported that Zavala sustained “multiple blunt instrument injuries” during the ride.

Medical examiners determined that his death was an accidental result of blunt force trauma, although details about the specific injuries remain unclear.

Following the incident, he was quickly transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Stardust Racers ride is intended to facilitate the transition for guests using wheelchairs, according to the Park Safety Guide.

Crump indicated that Zavala’s family is pressing for the release of essential documents, including maintenance logs, inspection records, ride data, and video footage from the attraction.

“This tragic loss calls for a thorough investigation and complete transparency. A man died after getting on a ride that was supposed to be safe. We’ll hold all accountable parties responsible to ensure Kevin’s family gets the answers and justice they need,” said Crump in a statement.

Karen Irwin, President and COO of Universal Orlando Resort, stated in an internal memo that the ride appeared to function normally and all equipment was intact during the incident.

“In our 35 years, this has been one of the most challenging moments,” Irwin noted.

The appeal remains closed as the park continues its comprehensive review process, emphasizing that safety is their top priority.

Zavala’s family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses, describing him as a “beloved brother, son, uncle, and friend.”

“Kevin truly was a remarkable person with an old soul and an abundant heart full of love and compassion,” the family expressed.

They added that he was always there to listen and offer thoughtful advice, even amidst his own challenges.

“Despite the numerous limitations and hurdles he faced throughout his life, Kevin approached them all with grace and unwavering spirit,” they continued.

The GoFundMe has raised over $26,000, surpassing its initial goal of $8,000.

As of now, Universal Orlando has not provided any comments on the incident.
