New Jersey election outcomes: Progressive close to surprising victory in Democratic primary

Progressive Candidate Leads in New Jersey’s Democratic Primary

A candidate leaning far-left, backed by progressive figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, is edging toward a potential upset in New Jersey’s Democratic Congressional primary, where votes are still being tallied.

In the race for the Democratic nomination in the 11th Congressional District, progressive activist Analilia Mejia holds a slim lead over former Rep. Tom Malinowski, with a difference of just 486 votes amidst over 61,000 ballots cast.

Mejia and Malinowski are leading in a field of 11 Democratic hopefuls vying for the seat left open after Mikie Sherrill resigned to assume the governorship following her victory in November.

New House Democrat Reduces GOP Majority

Malinowski, who previously served as assistant secretary of state under President Obama and represented a nearby New Jersey district until his unsuccessful re-election bid in 2022, was seen as a frontrunner prior to the primary.

The primary winner will compete against Randolph Mayor Joe Hathaway, the sole Republican candidate slated for the special election on April 16.

This special election occurs as Republicans currently hold a tenuous 218-214 majority in the House.

While Hathaway appears to be the underdog, it’s worth noting that Sherrill triumphed in the district in 2024 by a significant 15-point margin, a lead that mirrors her performance in the gubernatorial race.

Interestingly, in the 2024 presidential election, then-Vice President Kamala Harris only secured an 8-point victory in this district, hinting that Republicans may have a slim chance to turn the seat.

Impending Special Election in Georgia

As the political landscape shifts, a special election to fill the seat of former Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is set for March 10 in Georgia’s 14th Congressional District. Greene, a controversial figure, resigned in early January, leaving a seat that Republicans hope to retain.

There are 22 individuals running in the Georgia race, predominantly Republicans. Under Georgia law, all candidates will share the ballot, which means if no one captures over 50%, a runoff will follow among the top two candidates on April 7.

Trump’s Endorsement

In a recent move, former President Trump endorsed Clay Fuller, the Republican District Attorney from Lookout Mountain, in his bid to replace Greene. Greene had a resounding victory in her district in the last election, winning by nearly 30 points, while Trump himself had a 37-point lead there.

To add to the dynamics, another vacancy has arisen in California’s 1st Congressional District due to the unexpected passing of Republican Congressman Doug LaMalfa. The primary to succeed him is scheduled for June 2, handing the Republicans a chance to maintain their influence in this strongly Republican area.
