A family in New Jersey is urgently looking for a living kidney donor for their 14-year-old son.
Thaddeus Giansanti has had chronic kidney disease since birth and underwent several surgeries in his early months, including the removal of one kidney.
Yet, that hasn’t held him back. Now in eighth grade, Thaddeus is active, enjoying activities like fencing, soccer, and hiking, as shared by his parents, Carlo Giansanti and Krista DeMark.
His academic performance is exceptional, leading him to receive multiple scholarship offers from high schools.
However, blood tests conducted in February 2025 indicated that Thaddeus’ health had worsened, revealing that his remaining kidney was failing.
Doctors informed the family that he requires a transplant within the next month to evade the need for invasive dialysis.
Unfortunately, tests showed that none of the family members, including his mother—who also has type O blood—were a suitable match.
“Dialysis is tough. I can’t say I’ve met a cheerful, athletic 14-year-old during it. No one wants to feel like a burden,” his mother reflected.
Despite the challenges, she noted, “We remain positive and hopeful. Our faith in family and God has been a strong support.”
Thaddeus is currently on a transplant list for a kidney from a deceased donor, but his family has been told that could take at least three years.
A living donor usually provides a more lasting solution, especially considering his age.
The community in North Jersey has shown remarkable support throughout this ordeal.
Neighbor Lisa Molinari shared a heartfelt post, and there are also YouTube videos being made to raise awareness and encourage living donations. The short video features photos and interviews with Thaddeus’ parents.
“The outpouring of support from our community has been incredible. People are reaching out, making connections, and helping get the message out,” DeMark expressed, feeling truly grateful.
“It’s a humbling experience,” Thaddeus’ father added.
Anyone interested in donating can fill out this Kidney transplant living donor questionnaire.
Donors need to be under 45 years old, have a BMI less than 30, and match Thaddeus’ blood type O.
