Countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Jersey City, New Jersey – Wednesday marks one year until the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off in North America, with the finals being celebrated in the state of New Jersey. This will be the first time since 1994 that the continent has hosted this prestigious sporting event.

East Rutherford’s MetLife Stadium will be the site for eight matches during the tournament, including key stages of the group rounds.

During a media event at Liberty State Park in Jersey City—where the World Cup Fan Festival will be held—Governor Murphy expressed his excitement about the final match taking place at the home of the New York Giants and Jets. He suggested it could become “the most viewed event in human history.”

Murphy promised an exceptional experience at MetLife, emphasizing that it will be safe and easily accessible for fans. “This is everything. There’s so much preparation, and now we can show our vision and generate excitement and energy,” he remarked.

With Liberty State Park providing stunning views of the New York City skyline and the Statue of Liberty, it promises to be an ideal gathering spot for fans. Murphy plans to engage with all eight games at MetLife, while also overseeing entertainment across the other 96 matches at the remaining 15 host stadiums.

“The Fanfest is going to be tremendous,” he said. “With 22 screens and room for 45,000, these experiences are extraordinary.”

Lasley added, “Coming from New York and New Jersey, the iconic skyline and scenery makes it a unique place for fans. This fanfest stands out.” The 2026 FIFA World Cup will indeed be a major event, hosted across North America, promising to be a memorable celebration for all involved.
