Governor Murphy Invites Trump to Club World Cup Finals

New Jersey’s Governor Phil Murphy has invited President Donald Trump to the Club World Cup finals set to take place at MetLife Stadium next month.

While attending a year-long event called Mark, Murphy shared that he had been in touch with the president regarding preparations for the 2026 World Cup, an event that will be co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico.

He mentioned, “I spoke to the president on Saturday night and invited him to the Club World Cup final.” This invitation is part of ongoing discussions between Murphy and the Trump administration related to the New York/New Jersey host committee for the World Cup.

Despite extending the invitation, Murphy noted, “I don’t know if he’ll be here.” The White House has yet to respond to any requests for comments on the matter.

The Club World Cup features 32 of the best teams from domestic leagues worldwide. It kicks off this Saturday with a match between Miami’s InterMiami and Al-Arie.

MetLife Stadium is set to host nine matches this summer, encompassing the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals, culminating on July 13th.

Murphy expressed excitement about the opening match of the tournament at MetLife, which will showcase Brazilian club Palmeiras against Portuguese side FC Porto.

“I guess there will be around 40,000 to 50,000 people for the kickoff, which is really cool,” he remarked.

This tournament serves as a preliminary event for next year’s main World Cup, taking place in 11 cities across the US and five in Canada and Mexico.

During an event at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, Murphy asserted his belief that the upcoming World Cup matches in the New York/New Jersey area will be a “blown away success and a safe World Cup.”
