New Jersey mayor subpoenaed in criminal probe of Menendez: report

The mayor of New Jersey has been subpoenaed as part of a criminal investigation against Senator Bob Menendez (DN.J.). reported by NBC News Thursday.

Nicholas Sacco, the longtime Democratic mayor of North Bergen, reportedly received a federal grand jury subpoena on Wednesday. He was re-elected on Tuesday for his ninth term as mayor.

The latest subpoena is reportedly unrelated to Menendez’s investigation into an exclusive deal with the Egyptian government to certify halal exports to a New Jersey meat company.

Rather, they were seeking information about law changes in New Jersey, sources told NBC News.

“As in the past, the Mayor of Sacco and North Bergen Township will respond fully to any investigations received by law enforcement,” a spokesperson for North Bergen said in a statement to NBC News.

Menendez’s office confirmed in October that he was under investigation, but the senator said he was unaware of the scope of the investigation.

“As always, if a formal inquiry is made, the senator will be able to provide him or his office with any assistance requested,” Menendez’s spokesperson said in a statement at the time. .

The Hill has reached out to Menendez’s office for comment.

A New Jersey Democrat was previously indicted on federal corruption charges for helping a wealthy Florida ophthalmologist win a government contract in exchange for a gift. The case ended in a miscarriage of justice in 2017.
