New Jersey: Police Officer Fatally Shot, Another Injured, 14-Year-Old Suspect Charged

New Jersey detective Joseph Azkona was fatally shot, and an unknown officer was injured after a shootout with the 14-year-old suspect.

Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stevens announced Saturday that the 14-year-old was charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of illegal weapons following a fatal shootout.

At about 6:30pm, the shot began near White Castle, with McDonald's teens wandering around with friends at the intersection of Carterlett Street and Broadway in Newark. ABC7 Essex County Prosecutor's Office. Stevens said Azkona was shot before he escaped the police vehicle.

The event is still under investigation as police did not reveal the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

FOX 5 NY Both the police and the teenage suspects said they were rushed to a local university hospital.

According to a Facebook post from the Mercy Association of Police Officers in New Jersey, the injured officers are “fighting for their lives in danger.”

“The Essex County Prosecutor's Office can confirm that two Newark officers were shot dead at 6:37pm tonight in the Broadway and Carterlett areas of Newark,” the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said in a statement. “Both officers were taken to university hospitals. One of the officers was seriously injured. This is an active and continuous investigation. There is no further information at this time.”

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy (DN.J.) wrote an updated X post about the incident.

“This is a rapidly developing situation,” he wrote. “Pray for these officers, their families, and all our men and women in uniforms who risk their lives to keep us safe.”

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin, DN.J., said his office was closely monitoring the shooting.

“Our law enforcement officers are doing harm every day to protect our community. Tonight is a reminder of the depth of the sacrifice they make,” according to a statement posted to X.
