A New Jersey elementary school teacher allegedly had a child with one of her former students, a 13-year-old man she lived with for several years, but the teenager's father posted on social media that his son and the child were together. He was arrested after noticing the resemblance.
The Cape May County Prosecutor's Office announced Wednesday that fifth-grade teacher Laura Caron has been charged with sexually assaulting a former student who lived with her in her home from 2016 to 2020.
Caron, 34, first met the victim when she and her younger brother taught fifth grade at Middle Township Elementary School in southern New Jersey.
Born in 2005, the boy and his family maintained a close relationship with the former teacher, and his parents allowed their son and daughter to stay at Caron's home several nights a week. According to ABC6.
The three brothers lived permanently with Caron from 2016 to 2020, sharing a bedroom.
During that time, Caron allegedly had an “inappropriate sexual relationship” with a former student, after which she became pregnant.
She gave birth to a child in 2019.
In a December 2024 Facebook post, the student's father pointed out the striking similarities between Caron's child, himself, and his son.
The boy's sister told prosecutors that she remembered planning to sleep in the same room as her brother, but when she woke up, her brother was sleeping in Caron's bed, the newspaper said.
The unidentified girl claimed that Karon started sleeping with her brother when she was 11 years old.
Investigators learned that the boy's younger brother had once witnessed Caron sexually assaulting his younger brother while he was sleeping.
The unidentified teenage victim, who is currently between 19 and 20 years old, disclosed to investigators that he had a sexual relationship with Caron and that he was the father of the former teacher's child.
The two kept in touch until her father posted on Facebook in December.
Police arrested Caron at his home Wednesday and charged him with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
She is being held at the Cape May County Correctional Facility without bond pending her first court appearance, according to prosecutors and court records reviewed by the newspaper.
“This arrest confirms the unwavering commitment of our office and our law enforcement partners to protect the children in our community,” said Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland.
“Teachers are trusted with the utmost trust, and these allegations represent a deeply disturbing breach of that trust. We will work tirelessly to support you.”
The Middle Township School District placed Caron on paid administrative leave. CBS Philadelphia Reported.
Prosecutors say the school district is cooperating with the investigation.
