New Database Highlights Abortion Pill Coercion Cases

Pro-life organizations are launching a new initiative aimed at tracking instances where unsuspecting pregnant women are coerced or misled into taking abortion pills. Sean Carney, CEO of Forty Days for Life, mentioned that there has been a noticeable increase in alarming cases involving men who trick women into taking these pills.

Carney noted, “Since the deregulation of abortion pills, we’ve seen some disturbing trends. It’s unbelievable how men have been known to mix abortion pills into food or drinks.” He expressed concern about the ongoing issue, describing these individuals as “horrible bastards” and criticizing how the accessibility of abortion pills seems to shield such behavior.

Reflecting on policy changes from 2021, Carney pointed to the Biden administration’s decision to ease restrictions on mifepristone, a key drug in abortion procedures. This change has made it much simpler for women to obtain the medication through telehealth services or by mail.

In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, several blue states like New York moved quickly to expand access to abortion, even enacting laws that facilitate mailing pills to areas with stricter regulations. Carney remarked, “I don’t think anyone anticipated this level of deregulation, especially without knowing how these drugs might be misused.”

He added, “This isn’t just a policy issue; it can lead to serious abuse of women.” Medication abortions have become the most prevalent method of abortion in the U.S., accounting for around two-thirds of all procedures, according to data from a pro-choice organization.

Mifepristone has been on the market since 2000 and is also used for other medical purposes, such as treating Cushing’s syndrome and managing miscarriages. Forty Days for Life is mapping out incidents globally through their database, indicating that “scumbags” are finding creative and malicious ways to misuse this medication.

One unsettling example involved a British man who allegedly dosed his girlfriend’s drink and restrained her afterward, which left her unable to have children. In Afghanistan, a minicab driver reportedly forced a pregnant woman to take the drug at knifepoint.

Kelsey Pritchard, a communications director for a pro-life organization, criticized the current administration for loosening safeguards, saying it has led to a national public health crisis, with women facing complications from self-managed abortions. Polls have shown that a significant majority of Americans want to reinstate in-person consultations before obtaining mifepristone.

A representative from the Family Planning Action Fund acknowledged the gravity of coercing women to take abortion pills but maintained that denying access to abortion itself is also a significant issue. They pointed out that concerns about coercion in current laws appear disingenuous when viewed in the context of anti-abortion policies that force women to carry unwanted pregnancies.

This week, Republican lawmakers initiated discussions to examine the complications arising from accessing abortion pills, highlighting the ongoing complexity surrounding this heated issue.
