Trade Tensions Impact Competitive Senate Races
WASHINGTON — The escalating trade conflict between the US and Canada is beginning to resonate in states that are pivotal for the upcoming Senate races in 2026, as highlighted by a recent analysis.
According to the Advancing American Freedom Foundation, a conservative organization established by former Vice President Mike Pence, states like Iowa, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, Ohio, and Texas accounted for approximately $188 billion in trade with Canada over the year prior to June 2026. This figure represents over a quarter of the total $674 billion annual trade between the two nations.
The analysis further revealed significant reliance on Canadian trade by these states. For instance, Iowa and Michigan each sourced nearly 30% of their trade from Canada, while Maine and Minnesota showed even higher figures at 62% and 30%, respectively.
This month, Canada responded to US tariffs by imposing retaliatory tariffs on over $20 billion of American exports, including products like steel, aluminum, and even everyday items like milk and T-shirts. In retaliation, the Trump administration had earlier imposed a 50% duty on an estimated $28 billion worth of Canadian goods, affecting items such as beer and electronics.
“A trade war with Canada will negatively impact many states, especially those heavily engaging in trade with Canada,” AAF mentioned, stressing the potential risks for states rich in energy and minerals, as well as those reliant on heavy industries and agriculture.
Republicans are working to defend Senate seats in states like Iowa, Maine, Ohio, and Texas, while trying to capture seats in Minnesota and New Hampshire. Notably, Sen. Susan Collins from Maine has been vocal about distancing herself from the current tariff strategies. She expressed concerns saying, “The on-again/off-again trade talks between the US and Canada lead to higher costs, risk, and uncertainty for Maine businesses.” She cautioned that ongoing tariffs could escalate expenses for families in her state.
For Democrats, flipping a net of four seats is crucial to reclaiming control of the Senate after facing two years in the minority.
