New Mexico accountant wins GOP primary, looks to cash out two-term Democrat in November

Steve Jones won the Republican primary to unseat a two-term Democratic congressman in New Mexico’s reliably Democratic 1st Congressional District.

Jones, 77, will face off against incumbent Democratic Rep. Melanie Stansbury in November’s general election.

Six Senate seats Republicans are hoping to win back in November’s elections

Jones, a former accountant with experience in the energy sector, defeated his Republican opponent, shooting range owner Louie Sanchez, ___ to ___ in Tuesday night’s vote.

In the 2022 midterm elections, Stansbury was re-elected with 56% of the district’s votes. Democrats in the district typically get at least 54% of the vote, followed by Republicans at about 46%.

New Mexico’s most recent redistricting process adjusted the boundaries of the 1st Congressional District, abandoning parts of southwest Albuquerque while expanding the district to include rural areas south and east of Albuquerque, including Santa Rosa and Fort Sumner.
