The New Mexico district attorney who prosecuted actor Alec Baldwin in the deadly 2021 shooting on a film set defeated his opponent in the Democratic primary and advanced to November’s general election.
As of Tuesday night, Mary Carmack-Altwies had 62% of the vote, compared to 38% for her opponent, her former boss, Marco Serna. Carmack-Altwies represents New Mexico’s heavily Democratic 1st Judicial District, which includes Rio Arriba, Santa Fe and Los Alamos counties.
Serna, a Democrat, served as district attorney from 2017 to 2020 but did not seek reelection before challenging Carmack-Altwies.
Liberal District Attorney Carmack Altwis oversaw Baldwin’s manslaughter prosecution. “Last” shooting incident Three months before the trial was scheduled to begin, she announced that two other attorneys, Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis, would serve as “special prosecutors.”

At the time, it was announced that Carmack-Altwies would step aside from prosecuting the case to “focus on the broader public safety needs of New Mexico’s First Judicial District.”
The district attorney added, “My responsibility to the residents of the First Judicial District is greater than any other case, which is why I have decided to appoint a special prosecutor to the ‘LUST’ case.”

Hutchins was killed on the set of the Western in New Mexico, and director Joel Souza was wounded by a bullet when a gun fired by Baldwin was accidentally loaded with live ammunition while they were rehearsing a scene in a church on October 21, 2021. Baldwin has since denied pulling the trigger of the gun that killed Hutchins.

Prosecutors dropped the aggravated firearm charges they originally filed against Baldwin in February 2023 after Carmack-Altwies filed the paperwork.
