Cross-Country Ski Training Launches in New York City

A new training method inspired by cross-country skiing doesn’t require snow, goggles, or lift tickets.

Nrthrn Strong, a Scandinavian fitness brand that made a splash in Sag Harbor this summer, is set to open its first permanent studio in the US on Wednesday.

“The response I got in the Hamptons was amazing,” said Nicoline Ross, the founder and CEO. “People were really drawn to the flow, power, and impact of NRTHRN’s training approach.”

At its core is a patented machine designed by a doctor and former cross-country skier, aimed at improving aerobic fitness, strength, and mobility.

“These elements are vital for long-term fitness,” Ross explained, who originally hails from Denmark and opened the first Nrthrn Strong location in Copenhagen in 2022.

The machine resembles a walking pad with skis that glide back and forth on rails, complete with an elastic resistance band attached to a pole. Users stand on the base and use a push-pull motion, mimicking the natural rhythm of cross-country skiing while engaging their legs and core.

“It’s one of the best full-body workouts possible, known for boosting heart health and lung capacity,” Ross noted.

The training enhances durability, raising heart rates and facilitating significant calorie burns while being gentle on the joints.

This machine can create over 50 different routines by altering resistance, speed, and movements.

“You can really adjust it for various needs,” Ross said. “In the Hamptons, our clientele ranged from their 20s to early 70s.”

Though the design is based on ski trails, Ross mentioned its benefits extend beyond skiing. Swimmers can replicate their strokes for offseason training, while cyclists and runners gain stronger legs and better core stability.

This equipment is also utilized by physical therapists and can be adapted for wheelchair users.

“For skiers, this is an excellent way to train in the offseason,” Ross said, emphasizing that snow isn’t a necessity.

Inside Flatiron Studio, the ambiance feels more like a Scandinavian retreat than a traditional gym.

Ross drew inspiration from her Copenhagen roots, with clean lines, earthy tones, and an atmosphere reminiscent of the outdoors. Custom lighting replicates the aurora, and a subtle pine scent fills the air.

“The concept reflects Scandinavian culture, where socializing outdoors with friends and family is essential,” she shared. “We aimed to capture that essence in the studio.”

Nrthrn Strong offers three types of classes:

  • Signature is strong: A mix of ski machine work and floor exercises focused on core, glutes, and arms.
  • Sculpture: A slower, Pilates-inspired class emphasizing balance and form.
  • Aerobic exercise: Intense sessions designed to boost oxygen levels and stamina through quick sprints and powerful movements.

“Using this patented machine, we bring the powerful full-body movement of cross-country skiing indoors,” Ross said.

“It’s a dynamic, year-round training method that enhances strength, endurance, and mobility, allowing the community to train like athletes in a vibrant environment,” she added.

Memberships start at $336 monthly, but will eventually rise to $480. A $19 drop-in introductory class is available for those hesitant to commit.

“Participants often say, ‘I used muscles I didn’t even know I had,’” Ross said. “For newcomers, it’s an exciting and different way to experience fitness each week, distinctly unlike their previous routines.”
