New Orleans Airbnb rental may be tied to deadly attack: Louisiana attorney general

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said an Airbnb rental in New Orleans may be connected to a deadly attack on Bourbon Street early on New Year's Day.

Shamsuddin Jabbar, 42, drove his pickup truck into a crowd during the city's public holiday celebrations, killing 15 people and injuring dozens more.

Authorities believe Mr. Jabbar was not acting alone.

Muril I participated NBC's Lester Holt spoke to NBC's Lester Holt for an interview that aired late Wednesday as authorities assessed the aftermath and continued the investigation.

“Certainly there is an active investigation continuing to determine how many more people were involved,” she said. “But we can say with some certainty that multiple people are involved.”

Murrill acknowledged that authorities believe a New Orleans house fire was involved in the incident and that explosives were being made at the scene.

“It was Airbnb,” Murrill said. “So we know these people were renting the house and using it for that purpose, and then other things happened.”

Mr. Jabbar was killed in a gunfight with police. Police are investigating the incident as a terrorist attack, as they believe he carried an ISIS flag in his truck and had an interest in the extremist group.
