Constitutional carry will take effect in Louisiana on July 4, 2024, but New Orleans will continue to require a concealed carry permit until August 1.
movie report On Monday, New Orleans Police Chief Ann Kirkpatrick said New Orleans City Ordinance 54-341, “which has been on the city’s statute books since the 1950s, supersedes state law and requires gun owners to obtain a permit.” [54-341] “It expires on August 1st.”
Kirkpatrick noted that officers have undergone special training to help them get through the weeks between the time constitutional gun rights go into effect and the expiration of 54-341, saying, “New Orleans Police Department officers undergo mandatory training to learn what they can and cannot do to avoid violating their constitutional rights against unlawful search and seizure.”
The New Orleans Police Department posted a PSA to give “responsible gun owners” information they need to know about the state’s switch to constitutional gun permits.
On April 18, 2024, just over a month after Governor Jeff Landry (R) signed constitutional gun ownership into law, Breitbart News reported that New Orleans Police Chief Kirkpatrick wants to create gun-free zones in the city, banning even licensed concealed carry holders from owning guns for self-defense.
July 2, 2024, AXIOS I got it. New Orleans police said they would establish a protected area “stretching approximately five blocks from Canal Street to Toulouse, including the busiest blocks of Bourbon Street.”
