New patriotic artwork revealed at the World Trade Center headquarters of Port Authority police

On Tuesday, the Port Authority Police Department received a meaningful gift: a painting from a well-known artist recognized for embodying patriotism within law enforcement. This donation comes as part of a larger effort that raised significant funds for charities aiding federal employees and their families.

The artwork, titled “American Flag/American Eagle,” was funded by philanthropist Michael Fuchs, with the donation amounting to “hundreds of thousands” of dollars. The proceeds are intended for the Federal Enforcement Homeland Security Foundation.

Unveiled in the afternoon at One World Trade Center, the painting represents “unity, patriotism, and the enduring spirit of America’s law enforcement community.” It will be displayed in both the New York Port Authority and New Jersey Police Department buildings, according to officials from the foundation.

Thanks to Fuchs’ generous contribution, his name will be inscribed on a plaque beside the artwork.

“I believe in the importance of giving back. It can be tough for officers and their families when unexpected hardships arise,” Fuchs remarked during the unveiling.

Since its inception in 2001, the Federal Enforcement Homeland Security Foundation has disbursed over $5 million in grants to federal employees or their families during times of crisis, sometimes within a mere 24 hours.

“As many know, when a loved one dies in the line of duty, people often think that aid will come from a government agency, but that’s not always the case,” said George Cowper, the foundation’s director. “A public death doesn’t automatically ease the burden on families, particularly as most aren’t ready for such tragic events financially.”

Additionally, the foundation supports law enforcement members and their families when officers are injured or facing hardships.

Vanegas, the artist from Miami, noted that providing this piece was an uncomplicated decision. “Without law enforcement, our safety is at risk,” he said.

Sergeant John DeVito of the foundation expressed hope that the generosity from Vanegas and Fuchs inspires others to contribute. He mentioned a desire to see a similar piece donated to the FBI headquarters in New York.

This initiative, according to DeVito, is about fostering the arts while also giving back to those who typically support through monetary donations. It’s a chance to purchase something meaningful that will hang in the very places of those supported daily. “Our aim is to not only assist donors but also the wider community,” he said. “Ultimately, we aspire to have such displays in headquarters across the nation.”
