Rangers’ Rookies Bring Life to Practice Amid Tough Season
It might have felt like September.
The practice ice was buzzing with energy as players chased the puck, executed quick passes, and celebrated goals that weren’t aired on TV. It’s possible to confuse this team for one riding a six-game winning streak, rather than a team finishing off a lost six-game stretch. Maybe they looked more like the team that snagged the Presidents Trophy two years back; it’s hard to tell, especially with the season winding down in just over two weeks.
“How we handle situations is a reflection of all of us,” Rangers coach Mike Sullivan remarked after Saturday’s practice. “We want to maintain a standard of professionalism in what we do, and we’re aiming to achieve that daily. My role as a coach is to hold them accountable. That’s the challenge we face.”
“Every day is a chance for us to improve. It’s about setting expectations and aiming for a certain standard,” he added.
Following Friday’s victory against the Blackhawks, the Rangers’ rookies played a crucial role in giving meaning to the final nine games of the regular season, which otherwise seemed less significant.
Dylan Garland celebrated his first career win against Chicago. Drew Fortescue notched an assist in his NHL debut, while Adam Sikora hit the scoreboard in his debut at Madison Square Garden. This was notable, as it marked the first time since 1932 that three Rangers achieved such milestones in a single game, with Jaroslav Cimmeral earning his first assist and defenseman Matthew Robertson scoring for the first time in two months.
“It was a pretty cool milestone night for all three of us, and we needed it. It feels great,” captain JT Miller stated. “This moment is special, not just for us but for the fans, too. There’s a lot at stake here, and we’re playing for more than just ourselves. It’s about putting everyone in the right environment.”
“We want to finish strong. There’s pride at stake, and a lot of guys are playing for their spots,” he continued.
This Sunday, the rink will host a game between two teams that have faced disappointments this season: the Rangers (29-35-9) and Panthers (35-34-3). It’s almost odd how the energy off the ice feels so different from what’s going on during the games.
The performances that might fade from memory are exactly the moments that will stay with the rookies forever.
“The rookies bring a certain enthusiasm to the rink daily,” Sullivan said. “Their excitement about being here and seizing their chances is palpable. No doubt, their energy is contagious.”
“Some of our veterans are stepping up and setting a standard we can all take pride in. No matter where you stand in the standings, there’s always something to strive for, and that’s what matters to us now. We’ll do everything we can to bring our best game onto the ice.”
